Fully automated bidding through in-house algorithm

TenneT is the transmission system operator (TSO) responsible for a safe and reliable electricity supply in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. PowerField’s BSP qualification confirms that it meets the technical, legal and financial requirements to provide services to help TenneT balance the electricity grid.

FCR is a balancing service designed to maintain the electricity grid’s frequency at around 50 Hz. When frequency levels suddenly drop or rise, PowerField’s battery energy storage systems (BESS) now respond automatically within a second, either by temporarily storing electricity or feeding it back into the grid.

Where FCR bidding was previously managed manually, the entire process is now fully automated and integrated with PowerField’s solar energy generation and BESS. In collaboration with partner FlexPower, PowerField developed a smart algorithm that enables daily automated FCR bids, based on current market expectations. The algorithm calculates available capacity, determines an appropriate bid price and completes the bidding process independently.

“The first automated bids have now been successfully completed, making FCR a fully embedded part of our operations. This enables us to continuously create value from solar energy while strengthening our long-term contribution to grid stability. Thanks to our collaboration with FlexPower, we have been able to implement a scalable and integrated solution.”

“Our collaboration with PowerField demonstrates how technology and sustainability reinforce each other. With a fully integrated approach, we can maximise the flexibility of combined generation and storage locations. We look forward to continuing our joint work on innovative solutions for a reliable and flexible energy system.”

The integrated FCR control is part of PowerField’s broader approach: combining solar energy generation, storage and trading, managed from a single platform to ensure optimal coordination and flexibility.

In 2024, PowerField commissioned a 52 MWh BESS located next to Solar Park Wanneperveen. This is the largest project in the Netherlands in which solar energy generation and storage are fully integrated. By managing the solar park and storage system as one, PowerField can respond dynamically to real-time electricity demand. This allows solar energy to be deployed with precision, exactly when and where it is needed.
