A more stable electricity grid for Europe

Imbalances in the electricity grid present new challenges. Imbalance occurs when there is a mismatch between the amount of electricity generated and consumed, which can result in grid frequency fluctuations and disruptions. To address this, the smart utilisation of flexibility is essential. Solar parks and battery storage systems also play a vital role in this effort.

Recently, grid operator TenneT joined the PICASSO platform. This international collaboration aims to leverage flexibility to ensure the stability of the European electricity grid. It uses so-called ‘balancing products,’ which help maintain grid stability during short or extended periods of imbalance. Eelco Rondhuis and Sjak Lomme see opportunities for TenneT to better manage passive imbalance actions, prevent price spikes, and collectively contribute to a more stable and reliable electricity grid.

PowerField expects that improved use of European balancing products will, in the long term, enhance the efficiency of flexibility, reduce imbalance costs, and ensure smoother operation of the entire European market.
