PowerField qualified as Balancing Service Provider by TenneT

TenneT is a European transmission system operator (TSO), and responsible for ensuring a secure and reliable electricity supply in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. PowerField has received a BSP qualification from TenneT, meaning PowerField meets the technical, legal, and financial requirements to provide balancing services.

To achieve this, we must find solutions to the challenges that arise, such as grid congestion and an inconsistent supply of green energy. As a renewable energy producer, PowerField wants to contribute to balancing of the grid through its production and storage. To achieve this, it is essential that our solar parks and storage systems meet the highest operational standards.”

PowerField participates in the Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) balancing market. This is a mechanism used by TenneT to maintain the electricity grid’s frequency stability at 50 Hz. As a BSP, PowerField helps TenneT to respond flexibly to grid imbalances. When electricity demand is low and a lot of electricity is being generated, PowerField can temporarily reduce supply by storing energy. When the demand is high and green energy generation is low, PowerField can make the stored energy available.

In the summer of 2024, PowerField commissioned its first energy storage system in Wanneperveen. This allowed PowerField to take control of the supply and sale of solar energy. “In addition to our access to the Day-Ahead Auction, Intraday Market, imbalance settlement, Ex-Post Market, and our registration as a CSP on the congestion market, the BSP qualification provides an important addition to the deployment and revenue of our batteries”, says Eelco Rondhuis. “This milestone marks a significant step in our ambition to create a more stable and sustainable energy network. By leveraging the flexibility of our storage systems, we can contribute to balancing energy supply and demand, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the energy market.”
